Guidelines
• has / have gone means that someone went somewhere and is still there now.
• has / have been means that someone went somewhere and then returned back to their departure place and are still at that place.
• had gone means that someone went somewhere and was still then when something else happened.
• had been means that someone went somewhere and came back.
Choose the correct form
1. They’ve gone to China for a year, they will be back next summer / came back last week.
2. He has gone / been home so he’s no longer at the office – he’ll probably be playing with his children in the garden.
