A List of English Prepositions

A List of English Prepositions

Using a wrong preposition will not often have such tragic consequences. But using the right preposition will always be a source of satisfaction, and speak well of one’s writing competence.

The word preposition itself says that it pre-positions the thought or action that follows. For a good example of this, consider the phrase: gathering in the corn. If gathering means harvesting, then it is an adverb, not a preposition, because it adds to the verb. If, however, gathering means assembling, then it is a preposition, because it pre-positions where people are meeting, i.e. in the corn.
